Mezzotint with Jenny Schmid

2 rooster coming out of darkness

"The Gatekeepers" • 6" x 6" • mezzotint with Chine Colle on Somerset Velvet

Taking an awesome class with Jenny Schmid at Penland right now. She’s amazing, and I’ve been a fan of hers for some time. Anyway, she’s teaching traditional mezzotint, and I jumped at the chance when I saw it listed (I’ve always wanted to learn the traditional technique, using a rocker). Result above.

And a detail:

I’m hooked! Looking forward to making more mezzos when I get back, for inclusion in the Bestiary (A Study Guide…), an artists’ book for MFA show (scheduled for May, 2011).

Your work is amazing….makes me want to visit your farm. I hope Sunday clean up and your ride home went well. Kathy and I were really relieved to get to Asheville. I haven’t heard from her to know if she was able to fly on Monday.
It was great being your roommate. I look forward to keeping up with your progression in your work. I am trying to figure out how I can make one of your pigs fit in my house.
    xxoo,

Barbara, it was GREAT being YOUR roommate!! I feel very lucky to have had you and Kathy as workmates too–you both are so considerate, and I’m serious when I say I could just listen to you talk like forever–you have the BEST accent. I love it. Sunday was fine–not nearly as bad as I’d feared. We got out of there around 3:30. The ride home was just fine too, though the waiter at an Applebee’s in Kentucky or Indiana, mistook me for Andrea and Allyson’s mom! It was very funny–he brought the check over, put it at my elbow and said: “Here you go Mom.” We all burst into laughter. So glad you like the work–thanks so much for our kind words. I think a pig might fit better in a barn than your house….
